Calcort (Deflazacort): A Corticosteroid With a Softer Edge

Calcort provides strong anti-inflammatory action with a friendlier metabolic profile than older steroids.

Corticosteroids are among the most powerful anti-inflammatory tools in medicine, but they can bring weight gain, bone loss and blood-sugar changes with them. Calcort, containing deflazacort, was developed with a softer metabolic profile in mind. It still delivers the anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects doctors need, while causing slightly less weight gain and glucose disturbance than equivalent doses of prednisone in many patients.

Where deflazacort is used

Deflazacort helps in a wide range of inflammatory and immune-driven conditions: asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, various allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, skin, eye, kidney and blood disorders, and to suppress immune reactions after organ transplantation. In pediatrics, it has become the standard of care for Duchenne muscular dystrophy from around age five, where it slows progression and preserves ambulation.

Practical dosing points

Doses are individualized and depend heavily on the disease being treated. For chronic use, the smallest effective dose is preferred, sometimes given every other day to reduce side effects. Calcort should be taken with food to protect the stomach, and treatment should never be stopped abruptly — a taper avoids adrenal insufficiency.

Living with a long-term steroid

Patients on chronic corticosteroids benefit from vitamin D and calcium supplementation, weight-bearing exercise, careful monitoring of blood pressure and blood sugar, and periodic bone density checks. Vaccination status should be reviewed with the doctor because live vaccines may need to be avoided.

Available packages

The Calcort product page lists convenient pack sizes for both short bursts and longer therapy:

  • 6 mg × 30 tablets — short courses for acute flares.
  • 6 mg × 60 or 120 tablets — a month or two of maintenance.
  • 6 mg × 270 or 360 tablets — long-term chronic conditions, especially DMD.

Larger packs stabilize supply and price per tablet for families on multi-year regimens, particularly for Duchenne muscular dystrophy where every dose matters.

Working closely with your team

Never adjust deflazacort on your own. If side effects appear, contact your prescriber to review the plan. Refills are quick from the Calcort page, but stay within the plan agreed with your specialist.
