Summer Skin Reactions: When to Reach for Cortaid
How to tell an ordinary insect bite from something worse, and how a topical hydrocortisone like Cortaid fits into a summer first-aid kit.
Summer skin has a lot to contend with: mosquitoes, wasps, plants, chlorine, sunscreen residue, and hours of sweating. Most reactions are minor, but a few become the itchy or angry patches that ruin the next few days. Cortaid, a topical hydrocortisone, is a familiar name in summer first-aid kits precisely because it calms the immune response in the skin without needing a prescription in most countries.
What Cortaid can — and cannot — treat
Cortaid is designed for temporary relief of localised inflammation: mosquito bites that swell, contact dermatitis from poison ivy or nickel jewellery, minor rashes from new detergents, and mild eczema flare-ups. It is not a substitute for antibiotics if the skin is infected, and it should not be used on broken skin or on the face for long periods.
Bite or something else?
A classic mosquito or midge bite peaks in itch and swelling within twenty-four hours and improves after that. If a lesion continues to grow, warms up, produces pus, or comes with fever, that is a sign of infection and needs a clinician, not a topical steroid.
How to apply it correctly
Wash the area with mild soap, dry gently, and apply a small pea-sized amount to the affected patch. Two applications a day are usually enough. Avoid covering with occlusive dressings unless directed. Full guidance appears on the Cortaid product page.
Prevention still matters
Repellents, appropriate clothing, and washing off sunscreen and sweat at the end of the day prevent most of the reactions Cortaid ends up treating. Think of it as the second line of defence, not the first.
Available packages
Cortaid is sold in convenient 15 g tubes, alone or bundled:
- 15 g × 1 to × 2 — enough for a single summer trip.
- 15 g × 3 to × 4 — a household stash for the season.
- 15 g × 5 — best value for families or frequent outdoor use.
Match the pack size to how often you find yourself outdoors on the Cortaid page. Keep it out of the reach of children and stop using it if the skin looks worse rather than better after a few days.
