Common use

Novelon is used for contraception to prevent pregnancy. It works by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and altering the uterine lining to prevent fertilisation. In addition, it helps regulate menstrual cycles, manage heavy or irregular periods, help manage PCOS-related menstrual symptoms, and may reduce the risk of functional ovarian cysts.

Dosage and direction

Consult your doctor for specific advice on dosage and timing. Take one tablet daily at the same time each day for 21 days. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not chew or crush it. After completing one pack of tablets, take a 7-day break before starting the next pack.

Precautions

Consult your doctor regarding its safety during breastfeeding as small amounts may pass into breast milk and could affect a nursing infant.
Individuals with hypertension (high blood pressure) need to take caution when using this medication as it can potentially raise blood pressure. Caution is also advised for women who have diabetes as hormone levels affected by this medicine can impact blood sugar control.
It should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Patients with a history of heart disease should consult their doctor before using this medication. Patients with a history of depression should use this medication cautiously.

Contraindications

Novelon is contraindicated during pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs while taking this medicine, discontinue its use immediately after discussing it with your doctor.
If you have known allergies to any of the ingredients in Novelon do not use this medication and inform your doctor immediately.
This medicine is contraindicated in patients with undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding. It is also contraindicated in those with a history of blood clots or clotting disorders. Patients with breast or endometrial cancer should not take this medication. It is not suitable for individuals suffering from severe liver disease or liver tumours.

Possible side effect

Novelon may cause side effects including nausea, headache, breast tenderness, irregular menstrual bleeding, mood changes, weight fluctuations, dizziness, abdominal cramps, and mild fluid retention. These effects are generally mild and temporary, but consult your doctor if they persist or cause concern.

Drug interaction

Certain categories of drugs can interact with Novelon tablets, including: Antifungal medications: fluconazole, ketoconazole; Antibiotics: rifampicin, clarithromycin; Antiepileptic drugs: carbamazepine, phenytoin; HIV medications: ritonavir, nevirapine; Blood thinners: warfarin, heparin.

Missed dose

If you forget to take a Novelon as instructed, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Never increase your dosage without consulting your doctor.

Overdose

If you accidentally take too many Novelon, seek immediate medical attention. Common side effects of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding. Contact your doctor or go to a nearby hospital.

Storage

Store Novelon in a cool and dry place. Protect the medicine from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of reach and sight of children and pets.
