Product description
Common use
Videx EC is used in combination with other medicines for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Videx EC will not cure or prevent HIV infection or AIDS. It helps keep HIV from reproducing and to slow down the destruction of the immune system. This may help delay the development of problems usually related to AIDS or HIV disease.
Dosage and direction
Videx EC must be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal. The delayed-release capsules should be swallowed whole with water, not broken, chewed, or crushed. It is generally taken once daily, often at the same time each day to maximize effectiveness.
Precautions
Videx EC requires strict precautions to avoid severe side effects like pancreatitis, lactic acidosis, and liver failure.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor as it may cause birth defects. HIV-infected women should not breastfeed due to potential transmission.
Contraindications
Videx EC is contraindicated in patients with known significant hypersensitivity to didanosine or any component of the formulation. It must not be co-administered with stavudine due to risks of fatal pancreatitis, lactic acidosis, and peripheral neuropathy.
